A Lake and a Childhood Loss

I was around five when I nearly drowned in a lake. That experience left me afraid of going near water bodies.

Months later, my elder brother was trying to learn swimming in a nearby lake when he began drowning. I was at the edge of the lake. I ran home, about a hundred metres away, shouting for my father.

My father was an excellent swimmer. He ran to the lake and jumped in. He saved my brother’s friend and brought my brother out too. My brother was still alive.

As I remember it, water had entered his lungs. There was no oxygen available, and about an hour later, he passed away.

I had survived my encounter with the water. My brother did not survive his.

This is a painful part of my childhood to put into words. I share it here as I remember it—a small child running home for his father, and a father doing everything he could to save his son.
