Journey Ahead
Thirteen dimensions through which I choose to live.
My Story explains how I arrived here. Journey Ahead is about what I intend to do with the life still available to me.
I have chosen to identify myself as A SOL—a Student of Life—and to guide my choices by four aspirations: Peace, Happiness, Quality of Life and Longevity.
To give these aspirations a practical form, I have identified thirteen interconnected dimensions of my life. Each deserves attention. Their priorities will differ, and I intend to gradually establish a sustainable rhythm across them.
I now consider myself entering the Commitment stage of life. My direction is settled; the work ahead is to build the capability, habits and arrangements needed to follow it.
I intend to work in five-year blocks. In the first block, my aim is to reach a satisfactory and sustainable level in every dimension. I think of that as seven out of ten. Frankly, seven would be good enough for the life I wish to lead.
The thirteen dimensions below give structure to that commitment. Here, I will record what I attempt, what works, where I struggle, and what I learn along the way.
Dimension of Wellbeing
My body and mind accompany me through everything I do. This dimension is about learning to care for both through ordinary daily choices, while exploring what it means to live peacefully and well.
Dimension of Relationships
Relationships bring affection, companionship, expectations and differences into my life. This dimension is an enquiry into how I relate to others, the space we give one another, and the care needed to sustain meaningful connections.
Dimension of Learning
Learning gives me the opportunity to question what I know, discover what I have overlooked, and develop what I am not yet able to do. This dimension brings together formal study, practical experience and the everyday willingness to reconsider my understanding.
Dimension of Wisdom
Learning gives me the opportunity to question what I know, discover what I have overlooked, and develop what I am not yet able to do. This dimension brings together formal study, practical experience and the everyday willingness to reconsider my understanding.
Dimension of Financial Independence
Financial independence, for me, means being able to sustain the life I value, honour my responsibilities, and make choices with greater peace of mind. This dimension explores earning, spending, saving, and understanding what is enough.
Dimension of Institution Building
Institution building, for me, is the effort to give a worthwhile purpose a dependable form. This dimension explores how people, responsibilities, resources and everyday practices come together to sustain work over time.
Dimension of Knowledge Creation
Knowledge creation, for me, begins with a question worth exploring. This dimension follows the effort to observe carefully, examine evidence, test explanations, and share what emerges with clarity and honesty.
Dimension of Professional Practice
Professional practice is where my knowledge, judgement and conduct meet another person’s need. This dimension explores the effort to become capable, understand the work entrusted to me, honour commitments, and keep improving through practice.
Dimension of Enterprise Development
Enterprise development, for me, is the effort to turn an idea into useful activity that can sustain itself. This dimension explores recognising needs, testing possibilities, bringing resources together, and learning when to build, adapt or wait.
Dimension of Accountability
Accountability, for me, involves examining my own conduct and seeking fair answers from those whose decisions affect others. This dimension explores responsibility, evidence, questioning, and the patience needed to pursue a concern with clarity and proportion.
Dimension of Public Engagement
Public engagement, for me, is the effort to bring thoughts into a shared space with care and purpose. This dimension explores writing, speaking, listening and participating in conversations that can deepen understanding and encourage worthwhile action.
Dimension of Self-Reliance
Self-reliance, for me, means developing the understanding and practical skills to manage more of everyday life with confidence. This dimension explores technology, mobility, making and repairing, simplifying possessions, and recognising when to seek help.
Dimension of Resilience
Resilience, for me, means preparing thoughtfully for uncertainty and developing the ability to adapt when circumstances change. This dimension explores personal preparedness, technological change, geopolitical uncertainty, and the practical foundations that help me respond with greater clarity.
