A School Life I Enjoyed and Later Questioned

Most of my adolescence was spent in an all-boys residential school. Contact with my family was largely during holidays, and my connection with the wider world was limited.

I enjoyed those years. The education was good, and school became the world within which I grew up.

Yet, looking back, I consider that upbringing imbalanced. It carried a strong military style and an idealistic view of how people should think and behave. At that age, I had little experience against which to examine what I was absorbing.

The difficulty became clearer later, when I encountered a world that did not behave according to those expectations. Thoughts that had once seemed entirely right became a source of internal conflict and suffering.

I can value my school years and still question parts of their influence. Both belong to my story.

I am still examining how much of what I carried into adulthood was my own considered understanding, and how much I had accepted before I knew enough to question it.
