Growing Up Without Quite Understanding

During those school years, my body was changing. Sexual desires were emerging, and I had my own difficulties understanding what I was experiencing.

The world around me was largely an all-boys residential school. My contact with family and life outside was limited. Within that setting, I was trying to make sense of changes that were personal, unfamiliar and sometimes confusing.

Today, I can describe this more openly. At the time, I did not have the understanding I now bring to it.

Looking back, I feel that this part of growing up needed a place in my education too. I needed help understanding my body, my desires, and how these fitted into relationships and responsible conduct.

A quality education can still leave important areas of life insufficiently understood. For me, this was one of them.

I will return to these experiences gradually. They belong in my story because they were part of the adolescent I was—and part of what I later had to understand for myself.
