The Wish to Be Understood

Making room for another person’s experience in a conversation.

DIMENSION OF RELATIONSHIP

A Sol

I would like the people who matter to me to understand me. My intentions, my choices, my silences—even the contradictions I cannot always explain.

But how much effort am I willing to make to understand them?

It is an uncomfortable question because I know how convincing my own account of a situation can feel. I know what I meant. I know what troubled me. From inside my experience, my response may seem entirely reasonable.

The other person has an inside view too.

In a disagreement, I would like to become more attentive to that fact. Before explaining myself again, perhaps I can ask what they heard, what they felt, or what they expected from me.

Understanding someone does not require agreement with every conclusion they reach. It does require enough patience to discover what their conclusion rests on.

Sometimes I may have misunderstood. Sometimes they may have. Sometimes we may understand each other and still want different things.

I cannot ensure that every conversation ends in harmony. I can examine whether I have made room for another person to speak without immediately preparing my reply.

The wish to be understood is deeply human. I would like my relationships to include a greater willingness to offer that understanding too.
