What Am I Still Willing to Learn?

What does it take to remain a student when experience has already given us so many answers?

DIMENSION OF LEARNING

A Sol

Calling myself a student of life is easy. Living up to that identity asks more of me.

It means admitting that there are things I do not know. It also means recognising that some things I believe I know may deserve another look.

Experience gives me a way of understanding the world. But can it also make me less willing to examine it?

When something feels familiar, I may stop paying attention. When someone offers a different explanation, I may begin comparing it with my own before I have understood what they are saying.

I would like to notice when I do this.

Years spent doing something can build competence. They can also build habits whose reasons I have forgotten. There is value in occasionally asking: why do I do it this way? Does it still serve its purpose? What has changed since I first learnt it?

Formal education has a place in this enquiry. A structured course can require me to work through subjects I might otherwise avoid. An assessment can reveal the distance between recognising an idea and being able to explain it clearly.

Everyday life offers other opportunities. A conversation, a failed attempt, a practical task or an unfamiliar point of view can expose a gap in my understanding.

Whether I learn from it depends partly on how I respond to the discomfort of not knowing.

Can I ask a basic question without feeling diminished? Can I let someone explain something without first establishing how much I already know? Can I change my mind without treating my earlier view as a personal defeat?

I would like to become more comfortable with these small acts of learning.

This does not mean accepting every claim or abandoning my judgement. I still need to ask questions, examine evidence and decide what makes sense. My own assumptions deserve the same scrutiny.

Being a student of life gives me a continuing responsibility: to keep my understanding open to examination.

What am I still willing to learn?

Perhaps my answer will become visible in the next question I am prepared to ask.
