What I Call Nature

I believe that this universe, everything within it, and life itself have come into being naturally.

When I encounter the idea of God as the source of existence, I understand it in my own way. To me, that God is Nature.

People have given God different names and forms, and attributed different qualities and powers to those forms. I recognise that these beliefs hold meaning for them. My own understanding does not require me to give Nature a human form or personality.

But where did Nature come from? What existed before the universe? How did life first take shape?

I do not claim to have settled these questions. I have made a conscious decision about how much of my life I wish to devote to them.

I am comfortable leaving them unanswered.

Someone else may find great fulfilment in exploring them through science, philosophy or faith. I respect that pursuit. My attention is drawn more strongly towards the life already before me: how I understand it, how I conduct myself, and how I spend the time available.

I can remain curious about the world without needing a final explanation for its existence before I begin living.

Nature is the word through which I make sense of belonging to this universe. It gives me a foundation from which to think and act.

That is my belief. I share it so that you understand where I am coming from.
